Reiki is a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction which often brings about physical and emotional healing. Reiki practitioners use their hands to direct a kind of life force energy. It is not their energy. They each act as a “hollow bone” to let the healing energy flow through them and into the client. I often use Reiki in combination with other healing methods, including braucherei.

Every society had (or has) people who acted as intermediaries between this world and the Invisible world (often called the spirit world). They were called different names depending upon the culture: medicine-man, witch-doctor, wise woman, etc. Although the word “shaman,” probably came from a Tungus word, it is now used to describe a person who goes deliberately into trance states to travel to the spirit world. Contemporary healers who use similar methods to those used by ancient shamans are called shamanic practitioners.

Soul Retrieval is a relatively common practice in many cultures. When someone has had a trauma, like an injury, an accident, or an illness, they sometimes experience what is called “soul loss.” They can’t seem to be able to get their groove back. They’re depressed, lethargic, fatigued. During a soul retrieval, the shamanic practitioner journeys to the spirit world and finds the soul parts and brings them back to the client. A soul retrieval can bring about amazing and long-lasting healing for the client. (I learned Soul Retrieval from Sandra Ingerman.)

Celtic Healing and Visionary Arts is a shamanic practice which combines core shamanism with traditional Celtic spirit lore. I learned these practices during a two-year training with Tom Cowan. I use these methods in combination with my own practice of honoring and celebrating the elements, the directions, and all of Nature.

In Ireland, the wise women and cunning men (the shamans) were often known as Faery Doctors. It was believed they received their gifts of healing after the faeries stole them away to fairyland. Nowadays, Faery Doctors act as intermediaries between the Faeries and people. A Faery Doctor was, in many ways, the Celtic shaman.

Braucherei (also called powwow or Pennsylvania Dutch folk healing) is a method of folk healing that immigrants brought to this continent and combined with other methods of folk healing already used here. It involves chanting or praying while healing. I have found this method amazingly effective on inflammatory conditions. I use it in combination with Reiki with remarkable results.

Word doctoring means different things to different people. I was trained to us certain words or word phrases to initiate healing. I find that poetry and storytelling can be used as a kind of road map to direct people to the Healing Way.
